Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Dennis L. Michels graduated from U.N.C Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966. He then attended the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, graduating with an O.D. (Doctor of Optometry) degree in 1970.

From 1970 until 1972, Dr. Michels served as a Captain in the United States Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California.

In 1972, Dr. Michels established a private practice in Kinston, N.C. and he continues to practice full time.

Dr. Michels is an avid writer, and is the author of a book on the practice of optometry, as well as many articles.

He is an enthusiastic golfer, who has played competitively, including collegiate golf at UNC Chapel Hill.

He is also extremely active in his local community. A talented musician, Dr. Michels plays the piano for various local events, and is known locally for sharing his musical talents alongside his three daughters as “The Musical Michels.”

He and his wife, Kathy, reside in Kinston. He has four children and three grandchildren – with a fourth on the way!

Dr. Bruce L. Reese graduated with a B.S from Brigham Young University in 1981. He then attended The University of Alabama at Birmingham/The Medical Center where he received his O.D. degree in 1985. Since then, he has practiced Optometry in Kinston.

Dr. Reese is a life-long citizen of Kinston, graduating from Kinston High School where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball in addition to participating in many club activities. He received the O.L Shackleford Award as the top athlete in 1975.

His education was deferred for two years while he served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints in Italy. He still serves in various leadership and teaching positions.

Dr. Reese was published in the Southern Journal of Optometry as well as the Illinois Journal of Optometry. He continues to keep current of new innovations that improve vision as well as treat ocular diseases.

Patients remark that they enjoy having their questions answered in his caring and unhurried manner.

He is a member of the American Optometric Association, the North Carolina Optometric Society and the Coastal District Optometric Society. He has served with the Lenoir County Health Department, the Exchange club, and with the 1999 Special Olympics Host Committee. Additionally, he does free screenings for various elementary schools in Kinston and Lenoir County.

Dr. Reese resides in Kinston with his wife of 36 years, Joy. Their four children graduated from Kinston High School. They graduated from college, married and now live in various parts of the United States. He enjoys traveling, sports, photography, discussing religion, and spending time with his growing family which includes 5 grandchildren.
